Things to Do When Travelling Abroad with Your Pet

Sometimes it can be hard for owners to leave their pets in the care of other people. And so, the only option is to take their precious animals along when they travel abroad for the holidays. To make sure that individuals who want to take their pets with them do not violate any law, it is extremely important to know what the regulations are and to comply with what is required.

The safest way to travel with your pet abroad is to do so under the pets travel scheme, which is a programme specifically designed to allow owners to enter or return to the United Kingdom as conveniently as possible without undergoing quarantine. To be eligible for the scheme, you must have your pet fitted with a microchip; vaccinated against rabies at least 21 days before the trip; blood-tested by the European Union; qualified for a pet passport from a certified veterinarian; treated for tapeworm and ticks at least 24 hours before the travel time; and returned to the UK on an approved sea, air or railway route.

While travelling, you must keep your dog, cat, hamster, ferret, or any other animal fit and healthy at all times to survive the long trip. Place small portions of their food in bags so you can easily give them to your animal companion while on transit. Also, you should take your pet's own bedding or rug with you to help settle her when inside the crate. In addition, if it is your dog or cat's first time to travel, familiarise her with a crate weeks before your trip to allow the animal to be comfortable with it and to make sure that she does not get stressed during the flight.
