How to Pet Proof Your Property

Puppies are curious little creatures. As soon as you put your new pup in your property, she starts sniffing and walking around to explore her new surroundings and discover new things. Curiosity should not be discouraged but your property must be hazard-free so she could walk around safely. Here are some useful guidelines on how to make your property safe for your pet. First, gates must be securely closed to prevent your puppy from escaping toward a busy street. If the bars are wide enough for her to get through, place plastic gardening fencing to make a barrier so she cannot wiggle through the bars. Next, check under the hedges or fences to see if there are no holes that are big enough for her to crawl through. Remember that a puppy likes to dig and if the hole is large enough, she might get out of your property. If you find holes, cover them with soil or use bricks and cement blocks to fill the gaps.

Puppies love to chew on stuff; thus, keep dangerous home utilities, particularly the power line, out of reach. If her teeth come in contact with a live wire, she might get hurt. So, if you have wires that are situated on the ground, ask an electrician to re-install the lines on the wall where your four-legged friend cannot reach. In addition, keep pesticides and garden chemicals out of your puppy's reach by placing them inside cabinets or on upper shelves. Finally, if you are using any type of mechanical lawn equipment, keep your pet in the house. If you leave her outside while you work, she might get scared of the sound of the machine and run around, possibly getting injured by the equipment you are using.
